Discussion Questions for "Up"

Here's a link to a few of my thoughts about "Up."

UP Discussion Questions

1) For what do each of the movie’s characters long? What do they want most?
- Carl Fredricksen
- Russell (the boy)
- Kevin (the bird)
- Charles Muntz (the explorer)
- Dug (the dog)

2) How do Carl and Ellie compliment each other in their relationship?

3) Ellie fills up the “Stuff I Am Going To Do” section of the “Adventure Book” before she dies. When Carl discovers it, how have her ideas of “adventure” changed over time? How does this motivate/change/fulfill Carl?

4) Russell describes a memory of his dad, then says, “It might sound boring, but I think the boring stuff is the stuff I remember the most.” What does he mean by this? How does it relate to Ellie’s “Stuff I Am Going To Do” pictures?

5) How does Carl’s longing change? How is this change symbolized?

  1. Joy Perry says:
    1) Carl - longs for his old life with his best friend and companion.
Russell - longs for a father-figure, someone to teach him things and to do things with.
Kevin - longs to be able to provide for her babies and to keep them safe.
Charles Muntz - longs to be able to prove that he is not a fraud and to restore his good name. He also longs to control everything.
Dug - longs for a loving, caring master and family and also for acceptance from his peers.

    2) Carl is the steady rock to Ellie's adventurous spirit. As they age, Ellie has to learn to be more dependant on Carl and Carl becomes her helpmate.

    3) Ellie comes to realize that all of life is an adventure to be experienced and embraced. When Carl figure that out, he is freed from the guilt he feels for never being able to keep the promise he had made to take her to Paradise Falls. He is able to let go of the 'stuff' of their life together and grasp the opportunity for adventure that is right in front of him.

    4) Russell reminds us that it is the daily interactions and every day life that is most remembered and cherished. Ellie shows that in the pictures of her and Carl's life in her book.

    5) Carl learns to let go of the past and live in the present. He learns that his trying to hang on to his life with Ellie was keeping him from really living and continuing with HIS adventure. This is symbolized when he goes to Russell's badge ceremony and pins Ellie's club pin (grape soda cap) on Russell's sash. He is passing that feeling of belonging to something on to Russell.
